Membership is open to all graduates of recognized schools in Canada. Each school's graduates will be assessed for their best path to board certification to ensure that members have the same standards and ability to document, use documented data appropriately and adhere to professional standards.

Why is Board Certification Important?
The government of Canada prefers professional designations to be earned through schools.
All schools in Canada must adhere to government standards, whether public, private or professional. Each province determines the requirements for a school and by doing so, governs the schools located in their province. This includes financial auditing, validating adherence to curriculum and assessing testing standards to meet graduation requirements. Once graduates have achieved the requirements of the school, a designation is earned.
Professional associations then assume the responsibility of licensing the graduate to meet the expected requirements of the government as a measure of protection for the public, whether it is done so by government-regulated colleges or self-regulating professional associations. It is expected that a professional association can demonstrate a level of consistency and professionalism amongst it members and therefore, guarantee competency for the benefit of the public.
Acquired education alone does not prove competency. A professional must be able to show a practical demonstration of their ability to achieve results in a statistically acceptable way.
Board Certification is the process by which a practitioner or professional, with a degree or diploma, documents by written, practical and/or simulator based testing a mastery of the basic knowledge and skills of their field. Board certification refers to a professional eligible to be certified to practice in a particular field. It is a time-honoured method used by all professions to gain recognition for all its members and advance the profession. Anything less will not be considered credible.
In order to be respected by governments, insurance companies, other practitioners and the public, holistic nutritionists must be able to demonstrate they adhere to credible standards and have documented, statistically-valid data to prove their effectiveness as a profession. We must also have a clear and consistent message as to who we are and that message is: We are holistic nutritionists!
